Photo Blog 2 BLACK PANTHER

I went to see Black Panther this past weekend and the many beautiful scenes that were implemented in the movie inspired me. Though it was extremely hard to settle on which scene I loved the most, I decided to go with this one. Here T’Challa (Black Panther) is about to accept his inauguration into the throne where his father formally sat as King.  Although the country of Wakanda is fictional, seeing as though this fictional world was extremely influenced by direct observation of many African countries, this scene is symbolic of the relationship citizens have with their leaders in some African Cultures.
I am most intrigued by is the distinct difference in what we normally see in reference to a King and what is presented here. The people of Wakanda are elevated on “Warrior Falls” and looking down on T’Challa while he is looking up at them. Culturally this scene may be offensive to some, but because this particular culture has generationally passed down the throne by physically fighting to earn the position as King and protector of their country, it is Charles Sanders symbolic sign that is a representation of the social construct between citizen and King.
The sensory theories of Gesalt as it pertains to the combination of sensations are heavily perpetuated in the picture, especially the principles of grouping. The different Tribes that the people of Wakanda are from depict similarities and because of the colors they are wearing our minds group them together based off of that. Not only do we group them by the colors that they are wearing, but also by how close they are standing to one another, which would be apart of the fundamental principle of grouping proximity.
Looking at this photo with no background information about the movie, it can be perceived that the people standing on the rocks are condemning T’Challa for something. This is where the Cognitive theory contributes to the analysis of images. Carolyn Bloomers mental activity, expectation is present because we as viewers expect that someone who is in this position must be of importance because he is the focal point of the photo, but where the misconception comes in is we may perceive that he is being shamed. If this image wasn’t taken from a movie scene, but was just a photograph for advertisement of the movie, words would be beneficial to illustrate what is taking place. Now that I’ve analyzed this image using perceptual and sensory theories, I love it even more.
